36-80

Sluchay v kvadrate 36-80 AKA Incident at Map-Grid 36-80 is an (unintentionally) amusing military-heroic 80s Soviet film. Perhaps it's their Top Gun? I'd describe it as roughly 40% military recruitment propaganda, 30% cold war drama (half Widowmaker, half Failsafe/Strangelove), and... another 30% military recruitment propaganda.

There is a white-knuckle five-minute sequence of mid-air refueling, an exciting couple of minutes showing four VTOL takeoffs from an aircraft carrier, a bomber drop of a manned rescue lifeboat, a heroicly dangerous landing in a rough field (rescue mission beyond the point of returning to a proper airfield).

Also an insane American sub commander that shoots his own crew members, fends off attempts at assistance with gunfire, and is generally psychotic.

Good fun.

(The emergency landing in the field is pretty great though. It ends with the plane smashing through an old building.)
