The Cobras Were in Bloom

I wrote a short novel. The original idea was sort of Naked Lunch in Space, but it drifted from that idea and wound up a lot more surreal.

When I was growing up the cobras in the zoo always bloomed on the last Saturday of summer. It was beautiful and mesmerizing, and helped take the sting off the approaching end of summer. Looking back, I think the timing was manipulated by the zoo for the sake of ticket sales. After all the genetic manipulations of the late 21st century, it's hard to say what is natural any more. All the cobras blooming simultaneously, and always on a convenient Saturday? Probably not.
